Low key Halloween

This year John and I kept it low key for Halloween. This was due to a few factors, which involve having no money, and having no life.

Yeah.

John is working tonight, so we wouldn't have been able to go out. But really, we don't have places to go anyway. So no costumes this year, which sort of bums me out since I really love Halloween, especially the making costumes part. I feel like the only way to do Halloween right is to make or put together a costume rather than buying one. But we will do it up next year to make up for it.

Normally I get really into the fall festivities, but since it doesn't feel like real fall out here, I sort of let it pass. I barely realized it was the end of October until just this week. Oops. The cacti and palm trees are throwing me off. I really miss the Northeast.

But John happens to be wonderful and realized that we weren't really into the spirit this year, so he surprised me with an outing to a pumpkin patch.

"Where are we going?"
"It's a surprise."

Then, "Yay, pumpkins!" It wasn't a real pumpkin patch, but it was pretty good for being in a city. Pumpkins displayed on hay bales, Indian corn, gourdes...you know, the things you want to see in autumn. We were a little bummed that we couldn't go to a real farm stand, with cider doughnuts and all that fall goodness, but it was better than getting pumpkins at the grocery story. Never will I do that. Never.

I went for my usual goal, finding the most perfect, roundest one. (The perfection requirement also applies to finding Christmas trees.) John went for a more ovular one. Is ovular even a word? Whatever, you get it. I was so happy with our festive purchases, that I smiled all the way home.

Then we carved them!

Luna did not enjoy this activity and spent most of the time under the table. But she changed her feelings slightly once I gave her pumpkin scraps to eat.

I was done with my simple one at least 30 minutes before John finished his. I spent the rest of the time laughing as he struggled, cursed, and finally altered his more complicated design for something easier to cut. Consensus: "We are buying real pumpkin carving knives for next year!" Our larger knives caused some frustration.

Happy Halloween!
